Sorry...there is no such thing as a perfect man or woman...that is why we need Christ...we are saved by grace because we can't be good enough...ever...when we have weak moments and sin (because we will)...we repent and ask forgiveness and try not to repeat it again...the more we walk with the Lord...less and less sin will have dominion over us. Be Blessed

The Greek word for "perfect" here doesn't mean "never screwing up" or any such concept. It has a connotation of "completeness" or "wholeness". Think of a jigsaw puzzle. It would be Perfect if it had all its pieces all in their proper place. So being "perfect" has more to do with WHO YOU ARE than WHAT YOU DO. Actually Paul's moral theology could be best put as, You are already perfect (through Christ). Now Become What You Already Are!
Becoming perfect, becoming Christ-like, is a lifelong journey, something which we will continue for as long as we live.

Through the eyes of Optimism, this is an encouraging invitation to consider Romans
12:2 = "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed, through the renewing of your minds, so that you can prove what is the Good, Acceptable and Perfect will of God."

I am Buddhist, not Christian, and I Often read the bible, having no ill-thoughts toward the bible, or christians, but respect the beliefs and free will of all people.

This is what I think is meant that verse in
Matthew 5:48 means. It means Rom. 12:2.
But I am no Theologian of the bible, this is my view.

Listen to Matt. 5:48 "You, therefore acquire perfection {grow, cultivate into complete maturity of holiness in mind and character, having reached the proper height of virtue and integrity), as Your Heavenly Father is perfect [Leviticus 19:2, 18].

As a Buddhist, through using skillful understanding, these verses are not pessimistic, but are most definately optimistic and very encouraging.

**The bible source used was the Amplified Version of the Bible.**

Thank You for giving me the opportunity to contribute an answer to your excellent question.

Have a great week, and coming weekend.

With Metta {loving-kindness and friendship).

P.S. - I do not think it is referring to the salvation of the spirit of a human being, but speaking of the salvation of the soul {mind, will and emotions). James - Jesus' brother said "Work out the salvation of your soul{mind, will and emotions) will fear and trembling [meaning take it very seriously].'
Transforming the Mind {Rom. 12:2) is the Christian method of doing this, brings a person peace of mind, and happiness, and improves his or her relationships with others
especially in the areas of effectively communicating with others.

You'd have to ask someone who has reached Nirvana. I don't know anyone who could possibly achieve that described level of perfection.

Some people think it's a sin to even attempt to be as perfect as God. Some say we're born with original sin, and can't possibly...even from the beginning...be perfect.

Be ye therefore perfect . . ..
(Matt. 5:48)

Relative Perfection

Our Lord’s admonition to men to become perfect, even as the Father is perfect cannot rationally be construed otherwise than as implying the possibility of such achievement. Plainly, however, man cannot become perfect in mortality in the sense in which God is perfect as a supremely glorified Being.

It is possible, though, for man to be perfect in his sphere in a sense analogous to that in which superior intelligences are perfect in their several spheres; yet the relative perfections of the lower is infinitely inferior to that of the higher.

A college student in his freshman or sophomore year may be perfect as freshman or sophomore; his record may possibly be a hundred per cent on the scale of efficiency and achievement; yet the honors of the upper classman are beyond him, and the attainment of graduation is to him remote, but of assured possibility, if he do but continue faithful and devoted to the end.

It is our goal.
We can not be self satisfied that way.
We must always be looking to God for help, a closer relationship with Him.

We are to always be in the attitude of prayer, always ready to pray, not just in church or at home.

Why would you believe in a perfect god, or indeed in any god? There is no evidence to support such a notion.

nothing you could do could make you perfect.. Jesus died to take away our sins and provided the gift of salvation so that we could become perfect in Christ and with Christ... you can't do it by your own attempts.. God has to interfere and help.. pray for God to show you this answer

Mankind can never be perfect on his own because we are slaves of our flesh and subject to the influence of others.
