OK, I can't find this answer on the dog whisperer, but Cesar did say not to take it out of their mouth, to make them drop it, but how ? and how to not obsessively want to chase cats. They are Shihtzus.

Work with one dog at a time. leave a long lead on the one you are working on. And get some really delicious dog treats. Throw the ball, then call her as she brings the ball back. Slowly pull in the lead at the same time.
When she gets back to you hold the lead, and make her sit.
Say, "Drop it!" while putting the treat to her nose to sniff..she will release the ball..to get the treat..take the ball..tell her, "good girl!" and give her the treat.
Repeat this as many times as necessary, until you can get rid of the leash and the treat..
:)

I have the same kind of dog and he wants me to play with him and throw the ball but he will never let it out of his mouth. It drives me crazy. Usually when he does this, I just walk away and then he will bring it to me and drop the ball.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/IpVEu

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

From my obediance training class: Have a reward(treat) ready. As he lets go, verbalize the command "Give"(or command of your choosing but make it unique and consistent). Overtime, he will associate the command Give with dropping the ball. One thing my trainer pointed out was to make sure you always give 'something' back. If you constantly take and take without giving things back, he will figure out the give command is something that short changes him.

Ask him to drop the ball and pet him when he does. If he chooses not to, don't force it, just turn your back and ignore him. If he wants to continue playing the game then he'll learn

I taught my dogs the comand "drop it" when they were very young so its not a problem for me. Plus I have Goldens and they love to play fetch. I say drop it and they do. I just kept say drop it and they caught on that if they wanted the game to continue they had to drop the ball.

Hey there,
One good way of stopping unwanted dog behaviours is attending a traning course. You'll learn the causes and some techniques to solve all your problems with your furry friend. A good online course you can follow is: http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=572

Their method is gentle, simple and most importantly effective. I recommend it.

i actually will take it out of his mouth. you don't RIP it out, just tug gently, while saying "drop". now my puppy will bring it over, then roll it with his nose, to me. sometimes i will put my hand flat on the ground, palm up, and he will come over an put his paw in my hand, as if he's trying to distract me. then he gives me the ball. as for the cat thing, they might grow out of it.
