I need to get a copy of my w2 for 2000. I can't find the box with all my records because we have moved a few times. What do I do? Can I get a copy still?? How long does my employer have to keep it?

the IRS

they can provide you with transcripts of your W2 information and have it mailed to you in 7 to 10 days, or by fax if you have access to a fax machine.
The IRS may be able to provide this transcript information for up to 10 years

To request transcripts of your tax returns and W 2 information:

Complete Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return (PDF 62KB, 2 pages)
Complete the form online and print it.

Mail the Form 4506-T to the IRS address listed on the form for your area.

If you are planning to file the w-2 for 2000, its too late! The IRS only gives you 3 yrs from the date the return is due, to give you a chance to file, to deduct your credits and deductions, for that year, if you don't , then they just figure your tax based on the income, and withholding that is reported to them!

You might also be able to get one from your employer. They are only required to keep W-2s for 4 years. However, we (I work for a large national payroll provider) keep copies for longer sometimes. It definitely doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck! :)
