Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is just another way of describing muscle pain and inflammation of the soft tissues. The pain is usually a result of an injury. This injury develops a trigger point which causes pain in other areas. Other causes could be:
medical conditions
repetitive movements
disc injuries
immobilization (body part in a cast)
So, the why is an injury or one of the above listed causes.

Treatment involves physical therapy, spraying a coolent on the muscle/trigger point and then stretching the muscle, trigger point injections and massage.

No, fibromyalgia and MPS are not the same! MPS is a soft tissue disorder limited to one area of the body while fibromyalgia is muscle sensitivity disorder that is widespread.
