If you be someone you are not, you won't have enemies. So, basically, be yourself. No one is perfect and no one will always agree with you because everyone is different.

Sounds to me like it means: no one dislikes you since you don't have opinions, or the personality to speak your mind. In other words, you don't oppose anyone on anything, therefore no one has any reason to hate you.
And apparently in Paul Newman's mind that translates into being a wall flower with no character.

When you speak your mind you tend to make a lot of enemies. Most of the rotten people hate hearing the truth. You can only have character if you speak the truth and don't worry about how others feel about you.

if you don't have enemies ,you don't have character means that in going through life you should have had enough opinions and voiced them to have created some enemies....you should not be so complacent to follow what the crowd wants and when you stand up for yourself there are bound to be people who do not like it...(make Waves..ruffle feathers..etc) thus overtime building character ... some will not like the outcome of this question..LOL

A person with the kind of personality which results in them having no enemies doesn't have a very interesting personality.

It means that someone who is friends with everyone has no character. In other words, if you stood for anything, there would be people that didn't like you for it, no matter how noble your cause was. If you side with everyone you meet or conform to everyone else's way of thinking then you have no character.

Anyone who has a mind of their own is bound to piss SOMEone off SOMEtime! No enemies means you've probably never pissed them off means you've not got much of a mind of your own which means you don't haev much character.

It means that you didn't take enough risk in your life. You have not truely lived your life. Your not going to please everyone with the things that youv'e done in your life, your bound to make enemies along the way.
