I'm talking about the barrel link and slide-stop alignment in particular, how do you know that everything has been aligned correctly and reassembled? I'm guessing that if everything was put back together and the slide will lock to the rear properly, then everything is ok.

Go easy on me, I'm new to this.

The best thing to do is a safety function check. I do it with every weapon in my armory after I put them back together.
Unfortunately I don't have any M1911's since the military went to M9's, but I found this great website for you.

Going to a gunsmith is sound advise, especially if you're new to shooting. Have someone who knows what they're doing show you how its done. Then break it down and reassemble it in front of him.

I'll agree that if the slide works when you rack it a few times, its together correctly. But again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking guidance when you're unsure of something.

If you don't get the pin correctly in the barrel link the slide will fall right off.

If you have everything put back together correctly you can work the slide a couple of times and everything will stop and start where it should. If you can't work the slide twice then it ain't right.

No gunsmith needed.

MAKE D@MN SURE THE WEAPON IS UNLOADED!

Rack the slide, cocking the hammer. Taking a firm grip on the pistol, make sure the safety is in 'Safe' position. Pull the trigger. The hammer should not drop. Place the safety in 'Fire' position. Pull the trigger. The hammer should drop. Rack the slide again, cocking the hammer. Keeping the safety in 'Fire' position, take your hand off the grip enough to disengage the 'grip safety' and pull the trigger. The hammer should not drop. Taking a firm grip on the pistol and making sure the safety is in 'Fire' position, push on the end of the barrel until it stops (@ 1/8 inch) and pull the trigger. The hammer should not drop. Release the barrel and pull the trigger. The hammer should drop.
