This depends a bit on the State and school, but in general T&F at the Junior High level is limited to relay and dash (running/sprinting) events (100 to1600 Meter), shot put, long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
In junior high, for obvious safety and insurance reasons, they generally do NOT run hurdles of any kind, pole vault, discus, and javelin.
For the most part, anybody can participate, and the first few practices will be spent figuring out which event suits you best.

Well, I agree that each middle school may have a different track program, but the main events are:
(RUNNING) 100 m; 200 m; 400 m; 800 m; 1600 m; 4 x 100 m relay; 4 x 200 m relay; 4 x 400 m relay; 110 m hurdles
(FIELD) shotput; discus; high jump; long jump
Again, it all depends upon what your middle school is offering in order to know what events there are in middle school track...

In my area, the middle schools don't even have track teams. It's unfortunate because I didn't start track until high school, and I wasn't even really that aware of it prior to high school either. I wish I would have started earlier because now I know that running is my sport! You are lucky if the middle schools where you live have track. You will be better when you get to high school track if you start now! I'm assuming that they would have all the typical events...100, 200, 400, 800, mile, shot put, hurdles, long jump, high jump, etc...

100 meters \
200 meters | sprint events
400 meters /
800 meters middle distance
1600 meters long distance (possibly 1500 meters instead)
110 meters hurdles
shot put \
discus / field events
high jump \
long jump | jumping field events
triple jump /
the events may vary from place to place perhaps a 3200 meter race and 400 meter hurdles also maybe a javelin throw but the ones up there should be for middle school
(400 meters = once around a track
1600 meters = 1 mile)
