Mirrors - every few seconds. Speedometer - probably every few minutes or when I suspect there could be a speed trap, speedometer is not an essential thing for safe driving.

CHAAKMAN....if you are a professional driver you must live and drive in a very remote area....at 60MPH your vehicle travels 88 feet per second. So, you check your mirrors every 12 seconds or less? In that time you have travelled a distance of 1,056 feet!!!!!
Mirrors should be checked as often as is necessary. As a general rule-of-thumb, every 3 to 5 seconds.
Instruments should be checked periodically as part of your visual search pattern.
Mirrors and instrument checks will vary in frequency with the prevailing conditions.

Let me explain.
When driving, your peripheral vision is attuned to any changes, sudden or otherwise, in your rear or side-view mirrors. If your eyes detect any changes, like headlights for example, in your rear view, your eyes will automatically be drawn to the 'change'. The same with side views.
Of course actively check your mirrors when turning or changing lanes.
About the speedo, glance down periodically, when driving alone, otherwise just stay within the flow of traffic.

I look in my mirrors a good 30 times a minute, I only check my speedometer when I'm not using cruise control. Then I check it every time I see a speed limit sign.

Every few seconds. To drive safely and defensively you need to know what is going on all around you, not just in front of you. The idiot tailgater or lead foot weaving in and out of traffic behind you are just as important.

i check mirrors every few seconds. i check the speedometer constantly because i don't want a speeding ticket.
