My husband has been teaching our dog lots of different tricks and he thinks it would be neat to for example let the dog sniff our sons shirt n then find him.. it will be fun n might be benificial in his teen years ( if you know what I mean) Please does anyone know how to train a dog to sniff things out, thats one trick I have to say I'm lost as for ideas. Thank you in advance.

Depends on the breed of dog he is. some dogs are sight hounds some are hearing dogs some are scent hounds. So what I am saying some are better at sniffing out scents than others so don't get too disappointed if your dog isn't a good scent hound.

You're asking for a lot of information in such a limited space. Your best bet would be to thumb through some dog training books in a book store or library and find a section on scent detection.

Keep in mind that the way you would train your dog will be way different than the way a police dog is trained.

The objective is to find. A doggy treat is in....which hand, is a good start. Then place a tid bit of, say cheese under two different small boxes or cans. Keep changing the object of the search to keep the dog curious.

You are best off getting a book or talk to a trainer.

There is just too many way to start and train a scent dog that it is best you follow the advise of one particular source than to pick up pieces of info here and there.

Well, I think the best way would be to start with treats, let the dog sniff the treat, hide it and let him sniff it out. Dont make it very hard the first time and make the hiding spot harder each time. When he finds it pet him and make sure he knows he did good. Eventually start dong the same thing with different object not forgetting to let him sniff it first. Later let him snif the shirt and say "find shirt" or something like that. Do this reepeatedly until u think the dog will recognize the command without sniffing it first. If he does give him a treat and show it gratitude and love. Eventually it will do this on command.=)

It is called scent discremination. Some breeds are better at it than others. Generally speaking the hound breeds are the ones that are easier to train. Some of the working breeds (German shepherds) and hunting dogs (all the lab and spaniel breeds) train fairly easily as well.

Your local pet shop should have some information, and you can also try your local dog training clubs.

let him smell some meat and then hide it, he'll go find it. praise him excessively and give him another treat, not meat. keep going from there. do the meat thing a few more times and then proceed to other less appealing things always followed by a treat and praise
