I'm thinking that we won't hear about such a person until well after they bring death on themselves or their followers. Usually they try to isolate and control their followers in privacy. As long as that privacy isn't broken, they're usually content. It's when the real world (and/or the law) comes crashing down on them that they take the final road.
Like the FLDS, Concerned Christians, the House of Yahweh.

I would think Fred Phelps.
I hope we don't see anything on the Jonestown scale ever again. That was horrifying to see day after day on the news. That is probably why threats of the supernatural don't impress me, since I've seen plenty bad in the real world.

The polys do it in cycles. In their case its not a singular leader. It's a life style that sometimes goes agley and gets tremendous law and community pressure. If fanatics can't strike out at the world and have their way, they consistently turn violently inward.
