Until it heals. No exceptions.

waiting until the scab has come off is the most sensible opinion IF you're not going to quit the swimming, but really it takes up to 3 months for a new protective layer of skin to form over the tattoo. swimming that often i wouldn't recommend.

before that point and certainly for the first 2/3 weeks, it is very much still an open wound and you're getting chlorine from the water going right into it which isn't good a good chemical.

you'll also have to make sure you clean the tattoo very thoroughly as soon as you come out of the pool too.

we tell people to leave it till the tattoo is healed, because the skin is broken the clorine in the water will affect the tattoo ink. only you will know when it's healed and this time depends on your healing time as well as what you have done and where you have the tattoo. wait till the skin has healed over the top of it, this can take between 7 and 14 days usualy, as some can take longer. cloring can bleach the pigment, and if you think about how many people going in that pool, would you want all those germs going in to an open wound anyway?

A cpl things....I also have a tatoo. I've had it for like 5 or so years now...and I can't imagine swimming right away afterwards...for a # of reasons. 1. it'll take way longer to heal, cause it wont be able to scab over right...and depending on where you're swimming...it's pretty much and open wound and you wouldn't want it to get infected...as u can imagine some of the nast things in swimming water...depends on where ur swimming. If it in a pool, because of the disinfectants they put in it, it may be ok...but if ur in the sun all day...it could fade ur new and older tatoos faster...if ur swimming in the ocean or a lake....yeah, i wouldnt recommend it at all. There's all sorts of nastiness that could hurt ur tat and potenially you. Call a tatoo place and see what they say.

wait until tatt is done healing.
Some times its two weeks, sometimes longer...
I just had a big piece and the top part was all healed nicely in two weeks (sholder area)....but the hip area took almost 4 weeks to heal, and it was all done at the same time...I waited till it all looked healed up, no dry skin or scabs. This was per my artist...I must have driven him crazy, coming in once a week "can I swim yet, can I swim yet.."

my artist suggests waiting one month from the time of getting a tattoo to avoid the possibility of bacteria getting into your not quite healed tattoo. that's why i always try to plan out my tattoos ahead of time and make sure that there won't be any activity conflicts. you may need to take up walking or jogging or something until your tattoo is better.

I've always been told to avoid soaking a tat untill the scabs come off. That means no swimming, baths (showers are ok, obviously), etc.

wait until the tattoo is completely healed. there is no time frame for it. but if you get in the water without it being completely healed you run the risk of fading the colors

The chlorine willl make the ink bleed out and you will have a nice faded expensive tattoo. Then youll have to get it redone. Ive had it happen it sux.
