Why do Americans like having dogs so much?

Why just Americans? The British are gaga over dogs, as are the French, the Japanese and several other peoples.
Advantages and preferences of dog ownership as opposed to cats, or different breeds?
What sort of specifics? Statistics on dog ownership? Or breed preferences?

first of all a lot of Americans live alone and dogs make good roommates. It is better to have a dog then the wrong partner.
On the other hand, in families, dogs are seen as a teaching experience for children. Get a dog, teach your child how to take care of the animal, at a young age, the child is not so spoiled.
But mostly, we just like having pets. In all reality, in the last poll taken it was found that more Americans have cats than dogs as pets.
But we just like having animals around us. I can't speak for everyone, but I just know that almost everyone I know has a cat or a dog. Never thought of it as being an American sort of thing. It's just always been that way throughout my life (in my mid years now,so it's been a long time).
The advantages are, you have someone who loves you and asks no questions only wants to be petted and fed. Don't know what you mean by preferences as all types of dogs are popular here. Even in apartments you will find big dogs, they just go out for walks more. Which in itself has created a whole job industry, the dog walker, he/she is everywhere in a city.

Well dogs are like family. They are very very special to most of us!! They can be your best friends and they dont judge you from the outside. They can be there whenever you need them to be and you can tell them any secret that you want. They are the best thing I think that has happend to me. Having a dog, a horse, cats, and a bird, (every once and a while a fish) lol
They go every where with you and everyone likes them. (mostly everyone). They can also be playful with you. Like you can look out there and there are all kinds of sports that you can play with your dogs, like fetch dock dogs agility and many many more.

I think people like to have dogs because most dogs are very loving, happy to see you, loyal and just make you feel good to have around. If I am upset and cry over something, my dog will lay right beside me and lay his head on me. They dont love you for money, they love you because you treat them right!!

Well, its not like its the "Sweeping sensition of the new nation"
But these dogs put us in a state of peace,the give us the sense of freedom,and they bring dog lover alike together!
Me bieng half amarican and half britt, (living in the US) i see dog lovers of all colors,of all cultures and "contenents" walking thier dog down the street-and though we do tend to spiol our animals just a bitt more- we are not alone in this!
Seeing the dog sleep under the babies craddle puts us in peace,
Running for hours and not worrying about kidnappers with our dogs put us and our parents at peace, but being able to love a creature who does not judge,who is so unlike man kind and sees us not for the color of our skin or the lables on the back of our shirts but for the poeple who love them and care for them!They see from their eyes in black and white- but see from there heart in full blown color!This is the peace that makes us content,and happy-just to be us!
"A mans best friend"-WRONG- we are there best friend- we adopted them,we chose them from all the rest of the species on this planet,so we are there friend!But they do not correct us on this mistake, they do not just turn thier backs and leave,they stick with us through the hard,the happy,the sad,the worsts,and the best!They ride the rollor coaster of life with us,not worring about bieng sick, but making sure that we always have a place to turn to if we ourselfs feel sick!
And freedom, The freedom they provide us is no freedom you can find by going to some county-but the freedom they take from there hearts and pass it too us,the freedom to walk to our friends houses alon with them,the freedom to leave them in the car even though its 99 degrees-and not once d they complain,the may "whine" but not to complain,to alert you-They give us the freedom to love like nothing else mortal!
They are not just an animal or mutt with fur,four legs,and two ears-but they have a way of life we take advantage of-we make them breed-while the mother dies leaving four pups to spend thier last secounds of life in the pound on hard cold floor!when we could of spent 20$ on getting them fixed!We use them as gurd dogs when we know they are gling to get killed-but they feel its thier responsibility to make ther owner proud,happy!There are so many great seeing eye dog,rescue dogs,police dogs,drug dog,ext!but all the rest we still take advantage of!Its so hard for them..i feel like they are so betrayed-because about 6/10 are!and i know im getting off subject-but ive really got into the mood now.....its so depressing!But thats why we love dogs.....there hearts so big, there judjment of poeple so little!

For me it is simple, it is someone else to become part of your family and shower with love. They add a unique perspective to the house as they are not humans, and it makes you feel wonderful to know that you are taking care of something with such good care that it will love you unconditionally. Something we do not always get with humans. I just adopted a two year old chocolate min pin from the pound, and he is so wonderful. My son and husband love to play with him, and then I get to mother him like one of my own. We know that he loves us as much as we love him. As Dr. Evil would say, "You complete me." That is what our dog does to our family.

Dogs can be tamed easily,they are pretty smart and they are very energetic.They fetch,they warn you when there's someone invading(possible) and there are many breeds. You can walk them too. Their poop and pee is not a favorite.Dogs can work and pull things like Siberian Huskies,whatever.
