I recently had a 15 month old kitten die from FIP. When I checked his pedigree lineage I noticed he had the same grandmother on both sides. Is this allowed and ok in pedigree cats. It means a lot of the same cats were present more than once in his lineage. I never noticed before. Do you think this could have been a factor on him getting so sick so young? If it were humans, they would surely have suffered congenital defects?

It's not illegal, but it's a sign of an irresponsible breeder. If he was a purebred cat, I would make a complaint to the breeder, and I would also tell other people looking for a kitten not to buy from this breeder.

The fact that several cats are showing up more than once in his papers is unfortunate, but it is unlikely that it caused his early death. FIP is a virus, so it isn't passed through generations. However, he could have picked up FIP through another cat at the cattery.

What you saw in your cat's lineage is all too common for a pedigree cat. That is why so many pedigree cats have health problems. I have been on both sides of that. My first cat has been the most healthy cat, and I know there was a lot of inbreeding in her lineage, a way the breeder saw of keeping a cat from developing diseases like FIP. The second was totally inbreed and I believe if she were a human she would be one of those people who had serious mental problems.
But, as far as you go with FIP, did nobody tell you what this is, and how your cat would have gotten it. It has nothing to do with the breeding of your cat, inbred or not. It is the feline equalivant of AIDS,or so it was explained to me by my vet when I lost a cat to it. It is something that especially show cats will pick up. It is a breakdown of the immune system in a cat and is spread by contact, but mostly by their urine. I'm afraid that you might have gotten your cat from a cat farm, where they do the damn inbreeding and don't test for FIP, and have too many cats all together.
If you do buy another pedigree cat, please go to an individual breeder, go to the home and see how the cat has been brought up, and best to buy a cat from people who don't show their cats.

That's inbreeding. It's the same as for any other creature, it has higher incidence of defects, mental and physical defects.
