i understand a little about the whole photogenic thing but is there a more straightforward answer? like does it have to do with how light bounces off of every part of the person's face? or maybe certain shade of color in the skin works better in pictures than others? what is it exactly??

I agree that this happens and also I have seen very average people look great in pictures. I personally believe that you could be correct in the light refraction and skin tones. To me there are definately camera friendly faces. It also depends on the photographer and their use of light. angle and structure.

I think it has more to do with angles than anything else. Like me for example, my nose is like slightly turned up, and it looks really cute if my face is turned to the side and slightly down, but if my face is turned up, it looks really ugly. Or eyes too, like some peoples eyes just don't look good at certain angles. It could be lighting too, but that can always be manipulated by a photographer and the background color can also be changed to look better with a person's skin tone. And then there are those perfect people who have perfect faces and look good no matter what angle or lighting or shade, but obviously not even celebs fit into this category because photos are always manipulated and edited for magazines and such...

This is because of both person who is taken pictures and the one who take pictures.

Some people do not act naturally when standing in front of a camera. They become weird. I don't know why.

And some photo takers don't know who compose or take pictures at low light condition, etc.

I don't know, but I'd like to, because I'm one of those people that looks awful in pictures. That's why I like photography: if you're the one holding the expensive camera, they ask you to take the picture.
