I might be moving to Sacramento. Can anyone tell me about the city? I'm looking at 2 bedrooms for under 700.

You will not find a decent place for $700 in Sac. Your budget would need to increase. Sacramento is a place where the rents have increased, home costs have increased and yet wages have remained stagnant. It gets very hot in the summer - weeks of 100+ degree days. Do not rent a place that does not have central air conditioning. The smog is terrible. There have been many "bad air days" where they recommend not going outside unless you have to and not letting your kids play outside. The traffic sucks. The city has grown fast and the roads are not designed to accommodate so much traffic.

Old town Sac is a neat place to visit and they have some good restaurants. There is Water World (a small water park) if that is something you like. There is an IMAX theater. There is a nice drive-in off Bradshaw and Hwy 50.

If you want cheap places look at West Sac, downtown and the south area. If you want nice places look at Folsom, Natomas area and areas off Hwy 50 by the CSU Sacramento.

Sacramento is a wonderful city. It is one of the best places to raise children; a family town. It's zoning laws keep the city a beautiful place to live (a car parked on the lawn will be removed in a hurry!) It is a city with many parks, and lots of large parks with many features. There are lots of golf clubs.
Renting and buying are different from each other. I haven't rented in so long I can't tell you what to expect to pay for what kind place. I can tell you a neighborhood you want to avoid is Oak Park. Also parts of south Sacramento -you'd recognize those immediately. Mid-town, just east of downtown may be both more affordable and more urban. It is a hub of sidewalk cafes, unique shops, good restaurants, and historic sites. It also has lots of Sacramento's old, beautifully restored Victorian homes.

A way to save on rent is to share with another person. With Sacramento State University, the Los Rios community colleges, and 17 miles away in Davis, the University of California at Davis, there are lots of students, and part-time professors to share the rent with.
There is so much I can tell you, why don't you ask some more questions. I don't want to overwhelm you. Yahoo! has a way you can contact me to ask more questions.

absolutely stay clear of florin rd, fruitridge rd and the oak park area. can be quite dangerous.

sac is a pretty good place to be. it gets a bad rap for being a 'cow-town' and isnt looked upon as being a happening place as say its neighbor to the west, san francisco. but it does have some good points...ur in a good location to go skiing (the sierras arent too far away, gambling (reno is about 2+ hrs east) and to get the big city feel...u can go to SF. they have a state university and about 15 minutes west is UC Davis...a real good school in a quiet bicycle college town.

combine everything all the posters wrote...and u should have a little better idea

you might be able to find a decent place for that price but it won't be in the most desirable areas...unless you qualify for low income housing.

your best bet would be mid-town. it's a fun area and more affordable than most. good luck!
