My husband is 11B. He was with 3rd ID til recently. He's had a love-hate relationship with it. He loves his job and even while people know that he has time left on his enlistment he's been getting job offers. Why? Because they know he's dedicated, hard working and professional under the toughest of circumstances. On the flip side he hates being away from me and our kids. But we look at it from the standpoint of it either being his career or a stepping stone to the type of career that he would like if not in the military . As far as the degree....don't count on having the time right now. If you're an 11B you will have a LOT of time that you are training or preparing to train. But you will have the ability to use the GI Bill after you get out so you can still get the army to pay for your degree. And for enlistment time...do the least they will allow you to do. That way you aren't stuck in something that you may or may not like. And like someone else said you get a reenlistment bonus if you decide to reup so that's just extra money...and it can be a substantial amount at that.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

I couldn't tell you what the army infantry is like but the Marine Corps infantry was the best and the worst four years of my life. Being infantry does not leave you with allot of time for school but if you are committed to getting an education you will find away to at least get most of your schooling done. I say go for four initially to see if it is something you really want then if you truly love it enlist again. You will get allot out of being a grunt anywhere you go. You will accomplish things you never thought you were capable of . You will make great friends, and training while a ***** while your going through it will be something you look back on and realize just how much fun it really was. If you want a combat mos be aware that your chances of going to Iraq are extremely high and that will also make it harder to get your degree.

I did 6 years 11B with the 82nd AB and now am an 11B3P E-7 with the Army National Guard.
I LOVED my time in the Infantry. You won't find a higher quality group of men than those who wear the blue cord. They are men who have volunteered to be on the front lines. To endure the toughest conditions and most grueling missions. The bond between 11B's is as strong as family. The job is physically and mentally demanding, and never the same. Also some of the smartest people I've served with were infantry.
I know some people will tell you its stupid to take a risky job, or to not get a "technical skill." But if you want adventure, leadership, hard work, and accomplishment there is no other MOS that compares. Plus, you get to make fun of all the soft'skill mos's...or poodle shavers.
There is nothing like jumping into a "hot LZ" marching 12 miles to your objective and engaging and destroying the enemy. All in a night's work. Or kicking down the door of a midnight raid in southeast Baghdad not knowing what awaits inside. Many people don't have a good infantry experience because they aren't cut out for it, mentally. Believe me, it will suck bad at times. But no easy accomplishment is ever a great accomplishment. Just ask the Rangers who scaled the cliffs of Normandy or the boys who jumped in from they sky, or the 173rd in 'nam, or the 82nd and 101st in Iraq or any other grunt who's seen God and the devil at one time on a battlefield.
But, like most people...you probably couldn't handle it. We always need people to fix our trucks, deliver our bullets, cook our meals, and patch our wounds.

First of all as a 6 year vet. DO NOT sign up for more than 3 years you can always Reup and get paid fat ca$h. Also 11B is a crappy MOS. lots of field time and you are totally going on the middle east tour. If you are smart look for something in Military intel. or aviation. I was in Aviation and it is alot easier to get to the battle in a helicopter than marching 10 miles with everything you own strapped on your back. Also Ask for 9alpha training(paratrooper) before you sign up. You will most likely be stationed at Fort Bragg which is fairly new and nice. Also get anything the recruiter tells you in writing.

If you want to "test the waters" and have time for your degree The National Guard has a program called the Simultaneous Membership Program where you can go to school while in the National Guard and you are Guaranteed NOT TO BE DEPLOYED while you are in school. You can be an 11-B while in the ANG and if you like it, may transfer later to the active duty Army.

I know a guy who enlisted as an infantryman and now regrets it. He wishes he had gone in and picked up a skill like computers, military police, anything... In the infantry you are a grunt and learn no skills you can use when you get out. Sure you can get college education when you get out but you do not have any knowledeg gained during your enlistment. Specialists get combat training and will see action in today's war, even though they are in a support role.

Wow, you only KNOW a guy huh? Actually 'person below me' you sound pretty gosh danged ignorant. I mean my dad is in the infantry and there are companies out there like Cintas and/or Pfizer that will ONLY hire retired infantrymen because they know how dedicated and skilled they are. My dad has gotten so many job offers from companies willing to pay him 6 figures to get out of the military and to come work for them in 'high' positions...

It's not for everyone. I don't regret my 12 years but there were time I hated it. I do miss the friendships - there's nothing even close in civilian life. Also it pretty much ruined my knees.
If you want kids, family, stability then stay away.
