Crate size for my shih tzu?

I was wondering what size crate I would need to get for my shih tzu?

a medium size big enough for him to get in, turn around, and lay down

you dont want it to be too big or the shih tzu will be comfortable going to the bathroom in one area and sleeping in another

you dont want it to be too small or it will be cramped

I don't believe in crates.. I think people are miss using them. I have eight Shih Tzu's and not a one of them were put in a crate..i don't understand why people are putting these dogs in them when they are away or working. It is like play pens for babies. What happen to the good ole days when people watch their dogs and not leave them in crates. I read in here how people will put them in the crates and leave them for 8 hours at a stretch. Crates use to be a safe haven for dogs..People are making them hate them. Crate is a cheap baby sitter and I don't like it. And knowing you are going to use a crate on this Shih Tzu breaks my heart.
People will get a dog in one hand and a carte in another.. I just don't get it.

just big enough for her to stand, turn around and sleep... bring the dog to the store with you to see.
