Hi Kristen,
There are several ways of answering this question. Firstly the word 'stud' in its origin applies to a virile male horse of good breeding, and appearance who is used to mate with several 'well-bred' female horses (fillies) to produce it is generally believed, superior off-spring or potentially champion horses, in order for horse owners, breeders, grooms, jockeys etc. to make a lot of MONEY! So the word was borrowed from horse-racing jargon.
Secondly as it applies to the male species 'all males' of whatever persuasion or age (assuming a certain maturity)like to be considered a 'stud'. Read that how you may.
Thirdly the influence of the adult sex industry prefers to refers to it's male actors/porn actors, male escorts/gigaloos
like actor Richard Gere in 'American Gigaloo as studs. And to confirm the status of his 'manhood' in this respect Richard Gere is reported to possess a fairly large organ. Ask his ex-wife the former world 'supermodel' Cindy Crawford, who by the way left him and had a baby for another guy, 'Mr. Nobody.'
Fourthly, Olivia Newton-John in the movie 'Grease' which I'm sure you've seen several times, towards the end, in an exciting scene transformed herself from innocent, naive school girl to one sexy, gorgeous blond to win over her sweetheart/hunk John Travolta. When he saw her in those 'tight' black leathers he was blown away, mesmorized even and said "Sandy" ! and she replied "Tell me about it, STUD!
You know the rest. He sang, "I've got the chills their multapling.....for the power your supplying, it's ELECTRAFYING" ! In other words he had all the qualities she was looking for and finally admitted to herself that she needed some good loving from her man. So I suspect she used the term 'stud' here to suggest that he got her 'hot and bothered' and she wanted badly to play the love game with him and be his love. Fortunately this is the stuff that makes for great movie classics.
Unfortunately, the sex industry and particularly, the Pornographic Industry in an attempt to 'corner' a billion dollar plus market today conceptualized and continues to market the philosophy that to be a 'stud' you must possess a male organ of considerable size, both in length and girth/width, specifically more than the average mark of 6 inches and usually much more than this length, which is a bogus/false notion. Under the microscope of scientific inquiry porn actors or porn stars are just men like everybody else subject to erection problems as they age, tiredness and financial concerns. But the psychological influence of 'porn' in the media and culture given this notion has traumatized many teenagers and even adult men who feel that they can never 'measure up' (when in fact they may have no medical or physical handicap) and so fuels all kinds of insecurities in lots of men. Some men also on the other end of the spectrum don't want to be considered a 'stud' because they also have size issues (being in their minds too big) because they also compare themselves with the 'average' size. So the problem of being or not being a 'stud' as I see it is for men to love their manhood whatever size you were endowed with by your creator. Women in this regard have got this 'stud' thing right, by simply not paying too much attention to it. Hope this helps.
P.S. It not the term 'stud' that's problematic, it's the meaning behind it that's imbalanced. There are no superior men, if you look through any objective lens. I'm positive it's men in general and those women strongly influenced by cultural notions of what the term 'stud' means who continue to fuel the controversy surrounding this word. Fortunate or unfortunate, you decide? I believe considering yourself to be a high status male because you possess a large or very large penis or feeling insecure as a male because in your mind you don't measure up, are both slippery slopes on which to put all your confidence in or lack thereof. All men must enjoy whatever 'tool' they been endowed with by their creator.
Good luck in whatever endevor you're pursuing. Your question is an important one.
