While a lot of people assume that DVD stands for digital video disc, it was officially called a digital versital disc. The name of digital video disc has become so common now that is has become a valid meaning.

From Wiki; "DVD", originally used as an initialism for "digital videodisk", was decided to officially stand for "digital versatile disc" at the time of the 1995 specification finalization (due to non-video applications).
