first off an 8 blade isn't a real blade. I am a groomer and if we are doing a summer shave down we normally use a 7 blade the length of a short haired dog, like a Dalmatian. However, I would not shave down a pom at all. I would ask them what kind of de-shedding treatments they offer. If you like the shaved look then I would go with a 4 blade which is a few inches long.

As a groomer, I can tell you that the worst look ever is a shaved pom. Better to go with a heavy combing, that's against the lay of the hair and then with the lay of the hair and then analyze the look for the excess thickness and use the thinning shears. Thinning the hair doesn't alter the appearance but reduces the thickness giving a sleeker look to your pom.
I've only shaved one pom, for health reasons and it wasn't a pretty look.

My pom got her hair cut. I asked for a peri cut/ trim around the anal area, and a trim elsewhere. What I got was a buzz cut, I was furious.

Unless the dog is heavily matted don't have him shaved down. Just a comb-out and trim.
Remember, you have a Pom not Chinese Crested.

I own 2 poms and I have been all over the internet trying to find out how to clip/trim thier hair, but to no avail. I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question, but I need to star it!

I belive an 8 blade? I can't remember, but I think that is good-- unless you want to keep him long and if so a scissor cut is in order.
