I'd say go to another doctor! Swollen feet could be very serious indications of other conditions. Have you been tested for diabetes or anything like that? Tell the darn doctor to look a little further. I highly doubt salt intake alone could cause foot swelling, unless you ate pounds and pounds per day. Hello? You need more testing to be done, like blood tests, etc. There's something more than just salt! Good luck!

First of all are you hypertensive? Do you have congestive Heart failure? Do you take any medications regularly? When your feet are swollen can you press you finger into the swelling and leave an imprint? This is called pitting edema. The best thing to do, as she said, is watch your salt intake...which can be taken very literally. Don't add salt, don't cook with salt. Watch the following things: Ham, bacon, weiners, processed sandwich meat, catsup, mustard, pickles, olives, chips, fast food, and ice cream, diet drinks, frozen and canned foods or vegetables. Watch those TV dinners!

Now as to how to help yourself when they are swollen; when you are sitting, don't allow your legs to hang down to the floor. Sit with your feet elevated...like in a recliner. When you sit up straight with your feet on the floor your circulation to your feet is drastically reduced by cramping the groin area...this is called depencent edema. Did she put you on any medication to get rid of the edema...like a diruetic? Good luck!

You can take a diuretic but they're hard on your kidneys and strip your body of potassium which could lead to muscle cramps and constipation. You may want to lower your salt intake and sleep with your feet slightly elevated (pillow under your feet). Swollen feet could be a symptom of congestive heart failure so ask for a chest x-ray to rule out any heart problems. Eat more fresh vegetables and walk regularly to keep your immune system up. Good luck to you!

Do more exercises with your feet like flexion/extension maneuvers with your feet and you might want to use ice as well to reduce the inflammation in the foot. Use ice 10-15 min periods 2 -3 x daily.

Stop eating red meats, salt, sodas and junk foods. Eat more fresh vegetables either raw in salads or steamed or stir-fried in extra-virgin olive oil. Eat more fresh fruits and drink organic fruit juices. Drink at least 6 to 8 bottles of pure water every day and walk. Walk at least two to four miles every day after work or school. At the end of thirty days you will want to continue this regimen for the rest of your life because you will feel so wonderful you don't want this feeling to stop. More energy, loss of weight, more skin-toned and healthy. Enjoy.
