global warming is very real, whatever the causes. most people cling to the belief that it's all a natural cycle, it would have happened even had people never appeared on the earth. they may be right to some extent. the planet changes all the time, and climate changes with it. there is no doubt of that. however, here's something for you to think about (as presented to me in college Geology) ...

carbon traps heat. carbon floating around in the atmosphere, therefore, creates a greenhouse effect. as carbon based life forms appeared on the earth, the decrease in the levels of "free" carbon made it possible for most of life as we know it to exist by making the climate more moderate. in addition to the carbon used in the physical bodies of the life forms, carbon was consumed by plants and turned into food that we could eat, and when the bodies decompose, the carbon is then essentially trapped in the earth, where it can be used by the plants but can't harm us by turning up the heat.

now, let's say, for the same of argument, that the planet IS just going through a normal heating cycle that has nothing to do with humans. burning fossil fuels (basically so many galons of carbon in various molecular arrangements with very little else in there), results, plain and simple, in a lot of released carbon, which then sits around in our atmosphere.

bottom line, whatever caused the warming process, carbon floating around in the atmosphere can only result in more heat than we can handle, and generally more unstable and extreme weather conditions.

is it a threat or just a phase?
well, let's see. someone earlier said that a few inches added to sea level wouldn't make that big of a difference. i beg to differ. most of the world's population lives near water, because we need water to survive. a few inches added to sea level will transfer to any water body connected to the sea. also, a few inches up can cover a very large area. in fact, a few inches is all it takes to cover the entire surface of Hawaii. a few inches may be too much for a country like Denmark, which is mostly bellow sea level to start with. a few inches up can mean a lot of inches inland. all over the world, wherever there is a coastline or a river bank.

also, it was said that it has happened before, and people survived it. that is true. however, when it happened last time, the world was not severely over-crowded, as it is now. we're depleting resources at an insane rate as it is. deforestation is a big enough problem now. if we had to be that much closer together in that much of a smaller area, what would happen to the forests? how long do you think we can live without forests?

phase or not, a few inches can cause a lot of damage. if we're lucky, it will be damage counted in millions and not in lives.

The global warming panic is just propoganda, mainly to bring economic ruin to the united states. The earth is warming, but it has warmed and cooled throughout its history. What is happening now is nothing new and certainly nothing extraordinary.

D@tCrazy, there is absolutely NO possibility that Florida will be under water in 20 years. The IPCC predicts that the oceans will rise 17 inches in the next 100 years. That wouldn't even make a dent in Florida. Al Gore's movie is full of lies (Florida flooding over in 20 years is one of the biggest whoppers.) This is just one example of the out of control rhetoric that the global warming proponents are pushing to cause panic.

EnragedParrot, I've read the IPCC report, and it doesn't indicate that we are facing some man made calamity in the near future. It shows that the earth warmed 0.6 degrees celcius in the last century. That amount of warming in minute as compared to past warming when there was no large human CO2 contributions. For instance warming in 13th - 14th centuries and in the 7th century BC was two time and three times faster than the current warming. And the earth and mankind survived that warming. The earth now is not even as warm as it was in the 14th century.

In addition, the IPCC report does establish anything as fact. All of its findings are 'Likely' this or 'Very Likely' that. The IPCC report indicates that in the last major interglacial period (the earth is currently in an interglacial) that the sea levels were likely 13-20 feet higher than present, and that temperatures were 3-5 degrees C higher than present. Human activity didn't cause those sea levels and temperatures.

The earth goes through natural cycles and is in a warming cycle now. The warming rate is NOT faster than the earth has ever seen, the temperature is NOT higher than the earth has ever seen, the sea levels are NOT higher than the earth has ever seen.

A tricky one.

I'm strongly of the belief that it would be happening anyway. However, I believe humans have some input into it - though not the type and level of input some would have you believe. Al Gore's ridiculous film, for example. Learning about global warming from that is like learning about Atheism from a religious fundamentalist.

It's not a threat to mankind at all, though. Man was around 20,000 years ago, when sea levels rose massively, and rapidly (source 1), and they survived, no problems. OK, sea-level might rise a few inches in the next century, it's hardly going to be the end of humanity.

I do, sadly think a lot of it is propaganda and fitting statistics to pre-conceived views, rather than fitting views to statistics. You can get statistics to support any view at all - and many of the first climate scientists were told to find proof of human impact, and it went from there. 35 years ago the 'in-thing' was global cooling...

Plus, if all the climatologists said it didn't exist, they'd all lose their funding and their jobs. So they've got a vested interest in making people think it's a huge threat, as it were, so govenments throw money at them.

I'm also sceptical because we can't even predict the weather for next week. So why on Earth should we take these 'climate models' seriously, especially with the massive varience in results that they get.

Global warming exist, or else you, your parents, your grandparents, and so on wouldn't even be alive.

But suffice to say currently humans are not powerful enough to influence the whole planet in a destructive manner.

It should be noted that the Earth itself play a more important on heating its atmosphere, not human and Sun activities.

Unless someone have forgotten about it, there's something HOT under the Earth's surface.

And also it should be noted that the Earth's surface and the atmosphere near its surface relieve its heat by evaporation, the heat of the surface evaporate the trapped water. No heat mean no evaporation, meaning no heat is relieve. If you feel hot, then it means the Earth surface you're standing on is currently not hot enough.

As for propoganda to attain something.

If that 'something' means "people fighting each other", then I agree.

If that 'something' means "authority", then it should be noted thatg you get more support by saying to people that they are doing nice things. You don't get support by saying to people that they are doing bad things.

There are professionals on both sides of the issue. I, myself, believe that the Earth is just going through a warming phase, just as it goes through cooling phases. Human activity might have caused warming to go a little faster, but it was surely inevitable. Animals lose habitats, go extinct, it's been going on for millions of years. Oh gosh the glaciers are melting?! The were not always there, just remnants of the last ice age. Sure the loss of them will affect different areas ( drinking water, feeding rivers), that's just how the planet rolls. Take a picture of the Earth a million years ago, compare it to today. Then compare the two to a shot of the Earth 3 million years ago. The Earth changes, thats a fact.

Is it all propoganda , like someone said to deny global warming today because it is a theory and not proven is on a par with denying the holocaust.
Another emperors new clothes theory which is fashionable and hip to be a part of.
Its all b*llocks in my opinion and a way of increasing taxation and perpetuating the gravy train and of those who ride it for their own self interest.

You look around the world and tell me if it exists or not. Just in the United States, record lows in the North this year. The hurricane Katrina that litterally burried New Orleans under water. Sea levels are rising in an unnatural rate, in 20 years there is a large possibility that florida will be underwater. If you have doubts, Al Gore's documentary will greatly help.

Why don't you go study the science (that means not listening to anything Rush Limbaugh says about it) and decide for yourself?

A good place to start is RealClimate.org
And you can read the entire IPCC report online here:

some home truths

politicians and scientists who work for politicians have downplayed the facts because solutions are expensive and means change and change effects many people income, and most of the world is kept in the dark of the real things that are going on.

: i have seen lands that have been turned from jungle into desserts by people in a matter of a couple of years ,because of the slash and burn method used by settlers and expanding agriculture, and i have seen rivers dry up because of deforrestation in many places in Africa and Mexico ,

i live now by the side of a river in Mexico where,in 30 years 5 species of fish have become exstinct .
and part of the year the river is dry this is for longer every year because of over use of water by agriculture and as a result of deforrestation.

there are natural cycles in the planets life
but a lot is influenced by mans existance ,and this is increasing with overpopulation, putting strains on Natural resources and increasing contaminations as well as destructions of essential componants the ensure living conditions for all life forms

in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification

in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat, usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification, the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days

in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert, the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else, and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)

,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.

collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,

as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious, rising seas result in landloss

each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss

more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,

and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.

Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,

At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.

SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes

reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.

the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.

the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia

Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

the protection of existing forrests.

stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.

more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks

,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour

alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine

recicling wastes,limit water use
