I agree with Pangel.

Sometimes it seems the souls move on without the body being dead. Or in some cases trapped in a non-functioning body. I beleive the soul kinds of molds itself to the body - if something is wrong in the body it can be mirrored in the soul.

The person who gets Alzheimer's soul is either saved or unsaved...depending on whether or not they had accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour and had been forgiven of their sins before the onset of the disease. They would've had their whole life up to that point to seek Jesus' forgiveness, and if they never did, I see no indication in the Bible where special consideration would be given them....they once had the ability and opportunity to understand and accept, but didn't. So, their fate will be sealed. It would be different if they were mentally handicapped from birth, there are provisions mentioned in scripture for that instance......for the Bible says, "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin." James 4:17. So it clearly shows that in order for there to be sin, there must be a KNOWLEDGE of what sin is......and one doesn't reach the age of someone (we'll say) who's 70yrs old and gets Alzheimer's, without having known sin in their life.....

I agree with Rays interpretation of a soul ( nicely said )

I have thought long and hard about the soul of someone with dementia
they seem to be here yet not here , and bit by bit they go further from this physical realm ( in terms of their soul )
so i do wonder if they are in some way drifting in and out of realms , or even just here in the physical sense and not spiritual sense
I dont know if you will understand what I am saying , but it is a subject I am particulary curious about and mean to investigate it more

edit
ahh greenwood seems to think along same lines :o)

First, the soul is the spritual part inside you. It's too complex a subject to truly understand what happens to this energy for those with mental illnesses. But, I'd like to think the soul moves on away from the body when the pain (whether physical or mental) is too hard to bear....so, depending on what stage of illness and how much the person can stand, would depend on when the soul moves to the afterlife.

While we are on earth our spirit is housed by a body. When we shed our body in earthly death our spirit is free. Why would the soul/spirit of someone with Alz. or dementia be any different than anybody else?

This verse addresses how the Spirit intervenes when we are too weak.

Ro 8:26 - In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.
