A good question.
Wars often tend to result because one side or the other thinks they can get away with it, or that the costs of war will be much lower than they really are-- for example Hitler thought he could crush the Soviet Union in a couple of weeks, and both sides in the American Civil War thought that there would be one battle, they'd win and the other side would immediately come to its senses and sue for peace. In both cases (and in many others besides) everyone involved was horribly wrong.
Fortunately a lot of the time states do try to settle their differences peacefully, but often one side comes to the conclusion that it can only get what it wants through force. Often this turns out to be a bad idea. But hey, often times the cleverest people don't wind up running countries.

Because just like an unruly child sometimes you have to smack someone in the head to get them to listen. War is a necessity after all other options have been eliminated. If no diplomatic solution can be found to solve a dispute you need to fight. Personally i think it would be really cool to settle this with a pay per view boxing match, proceeds go to educating the children of the winners country but since that isn't going to happen war is a necessary evil

Wake up, this is the real world not some fairy tale. War as always been around as long as man as walked the earth. Have an army and being ready to go to war is what stops others from invading our country. have a military and the will to use it against other is the way we can ensure our survival and our way of life.

If wars were settled in the way you ask, just think, Halliburton couldn't scam the tax payers out of billions, Cheney wouldn't have a job after he is gone, the Dems couldn't protest a Chess game, or would they???, Ann, The Man, Coulter wouldn't be able to call all dems rat finks, Hannity and Billy OH, REALLY, would be out of work and couldn't spin a chess game, or could they??? And Rush The Pill Popper, wouldn't have anything to rant about. So, Lets Keep Fighting.

I'm my opin. War doesnt answer questions. Just make more questions arise. So my ques.. how did it come about. ? Was it from the lost souls in 9-11 or was it orchestrated ? As in our gov knew before hand ? Lots of questions and I would love to know my self. Too many things going on here . Bush musta known but look he is a biggie in the oil and gas and has a lot to gain by dragging this was out. If you find out let us all know.

Do you really think a corrupt country like Iraq would stop killing its people if we kindly asked it to? I dont think so, we havent been in many wars as other countries, so before you start judging us and inevitably presuming we all are just some mindless fools, look at what your really saying, and ask yourself, where would we be without war?

War is considered the means of last resort to make someone do what you want them to. It's imperfect and bloody, and the trick is that you need to figure out when to use it and when not to. Right now, we aren't doing so well at that last bit.
In theory pacifism is perfect, but the reality is that people suck. You need to be able to go to war to protect yourself and others.

war is good for plenty of things; that's not to say it's good. countries choose war because it is much simpler than diplomacy. a famous author once said "compromise leaves everyone angry", and in diplomacy, everyone has to lose something in order to agree. whereas in war, it's winner-take-all. but consider this: without war, we wouldn't have aircraft, computers, or most of the technology, science, and medecine we today take for granted. war is instrumental in advancing civilization.

The war we're in now is simply a wealth redistribution scheme. The administration has taken from the middle and lower classes and given the money--by the billions--to the already rich. Wars always enrich corporations and defense contractors, great friends of the Republicans.
