Basically it means one is judged by the company one keeps.
So, if you hang out with a bad crowd, people will think you are bad. Unless that's how you want people to think of you, then you are better off staying away from the bad crowd: i.e. you're better off alone. Good advice from Booker T.

Basically, choose your friends wisely... you're better off alone than with people who can have a bad influence on you... it's harder to convince yourself to do something wrong than for other people to get you to do something bad.

means you should heng round with good friends who do good stuff, because if you heng round with bad friends you'll become as bad and corrupted as they are.
