Basically it means one is judged by the company one keeps.
So, if you hang out with a bad crowd, people will think you are bad. Unless that's how you want people to think of you, then you are better off staying away from the bad crowd: i.e. you're better off alone. Good advice from Booker T.

Only hang with good people, not the ones that will get you in trouble. It's better to be alone or by yourself than to hang with the trouble makers

Basically, choose your friends wisely... you're better off alone than with people who can have a bad influence on you... it's harder to convince yourself to do something wrong than for other people to get you to do something bad.

Having good friends is the best, but having bad friends is worse than simply being alone.

Bad friends will get you into trouble. Better off being with no one if you can't find good friends.

I think it means that you should have good friends, and not bad ones... it's better to be alone than to have bad friends who'd make you do wrong...

It means if you can't find people who are honorable and worthy of your company, you might as well go through life alone, and that way stay out of trouble and heartache.

Yes, one has to choose good company or would rather not have anyone if that person's influence will be bad.
