Real root beer is actually from the roots of several kinds of trees and bushes. It was originally used a a tonic (the original herbal beverage). I have an old book from 1932, that lists several different recipes. most including various combinations of sarsparilla, pine, ginger, mandrake, sassafras and others, usually sweetened with molasses and sometimes fermented to produce fizz and alcohol.
Modern root beer is usually artificially flavored, or mostly sarsparilla and pine.
