I FEEL YOUR PAIN SWEET PEA~~~~~

My "Tom" a 5 year old recently rescued (by me) former stray kitty baby is the "King of Drool Land" !!

He looks like he has a "Drool Beard" most of the times when he wakes up.

He'll have strands of "thickened" drool hanging down to the floor practically.

Along with hacking/coughing/gurgling he is a CRANKY BOY!

"Tommy" has MANY issues. He has chronic colds/URI's :( due to his DX of FIV. AND he has bad teeth, and he has a problem with sleeping with his mouth a little opened and/or his tounge sticking out, and he is missing front teeth leaving a "gap" where he puts his tongue. His gums BLEED when attempts at cleaning his gumline/teeth are made (to risky/intrusive says the Doc Vet) Dental care is on a as needed basis.

Sound familiar?? HUH?? Does it??

THOUGHT SO!

#1: Is it a densue? 9x out of 10 it IS a dental issue. To much plaque/gingivitas/cavity/bad tooth/abcsess.

#2: RABIES!!!! LOL! Just kidding wanted to make certain you were paying attention to me!

#3: It can be/is a sign of an URI (Upper Respitory Infection).
I know this because "Shadow" was a "Drool Machine" too and was DX with a URI.

#4: Unfortunately A LOT of symptoms in cats resemble LOTS of cat diseases. A cough could be a hairball or URI or LRI or FIV/FLK, etc...

Take in all the info being thrown at you, take a close look at your kitty, note any other signs/symptoms.
Yukky as it sounds (and is) what does his breath smell like? That alone can narrow down a illness. Yes, it is true.

Is kitty active?

Have trouble eating crunchy foods?

Drinking/wanting a lot more cold water than usual?

Peeing/Pooing normal/abnormal?

And of course the end all of be all's is "Go to the Vet"

A cat's breath/mouth/drool should not smell hideous. It will of course smell like cat food or hot fish depending on what you feed it. If his drool never smelled before and now it really does it could be a sign a infection in your cat, coming from either the guts, throat or mouth. Or if you don't brush his teeth and a heavy build up of tartar has occurred (this is especially likely if you feed him soft food or alot of treats) it needs to be cleared away by the vet.
You can check his teeth yourself for the tell-tale build up of tartar, it appears as a yellow, hard material over the teeth. Do not attempt to remove it yourself! It adheres to the teeth like a barnacle on a ship and you could actually break teeth trying to remove it without profession help.
Either way you need to take him to the vet, as a bad odour change in your animal could mean a turn for the worse in his health and should be addressed immediately.

i don't know if drooling in a kitten indicates a problem but bad breath (worse than you would expect from a cat) is usually a sign of infection--which can get worse if left untreated
You need to take the cat to the vet--in fact any time you have a question about some unusual behavior or symptom, it is much safer to take the cat to the vet than to ask online.
The condition causing the bad breath should be treated--in addition to being sick, your cat may be in pain. they don't always show it.

If it smells it could be normal as cats mouth's are infested with germs. Considering his age i would not have thought he would have a dental issue however it is not unheard of so it may be worth having it check especially if it has 0only started to smell.
Some cats do drool like this when they are enjoying themselves alot and yes it is gross.
Some cats grow out of it ut considering he is 2 now it is probably here to stay.

GREAT question! My cat does this too, but she's still a kitten so it's cute.

I think it's just overactive saliva glands, like in some dogs.

If he's anything like my cat, then he just loves you waaaay too much, and so purrs too much, simulating the glands making too much drool to be contained in the mouth.

Oh my cat is so so cute though =)

hmmm, my one cat normally drools when you pet him. he eventually shakes his head and lets it fly all over the place. about the smell,he might have "double teeth" when he was younger a few baby teeth might not have fallen out. if so they will have to be pulled by a vet, if not brushing his teeth will probably help, but a continuance of bad breath with brushing, i would go see a vet

my sister had a dog that had the same problem. She took it to the vet and the vet gave her medicine that keeps her from drooling! They probably have medicine for cats as well.

My cat is a big time drooler, some just are! I can't let him lay on me without having a wet shirt and forget about a dry face if she shakes his head...
No clue why it smells though, maybe try brushing his teeth or make sure he's getting enough hard food as that is best for their teeth!

My advice is get the teeth cleaned. It is the biggest reason for drool.

Her teeth may be rotten or she has a stomach aliment. Please dont hesitate and take her to a vet. She deserves to seek medical help just as we would hope you would if you were drooling and it smelled terrible wouldnt you?
