If the laws of a country stated that any person commiting a crime were subjected to the crime by the same measure they committed it, would this not act as a deterent to do terrible tourtuous crimes?

I think the problem with deterrents is that they prevent sane, generally stable people from committing crimes, while ignoring the fact that many crimes are committed in moments of passion, obsession, or by people who have mental illness. If someone isn't thinking clearly to begin with, they are not going to stop to weigh the consequences of their actions, so deterrents would fail to be of any value.

To some extent, I agree. I think a person who beats someone should be beaten also. I really think crimes against children should be dealt with with the person having done to them what they did to the child. I really do think it would help deter people from certain crimes. It sure would be cheaper then putting them in prison forever!!! This said, I'm also for capital punishment, even though I am christian. I say let them die quick so we don't have to pay for them to sit and rot!!
