Dave,
I am based out of North Carolina as well.
Depending on what you are interested in doing when you get there, there are ALOT of great places with in a short x-country.
If you like to golf, try KCRE at North Myrtle Beach. They have
courtesy cars and over a hundred golf courses close by, not to mention the seafood. The FBO (Ramp66) there is second to none!
The outter banks (W95) is a favorite vacation spot of mine (great fishing, clean beaches).
St. Simons Island, Ga. ( KSSI ,Malcolm Mc Kinnon Airport)is a short drive to this 10 star resort.
In the NC mountains, there is Mountain Air Country Club (2NCO) with a 2875 ft. paved private runway. Has a
18-hole championship golf course,
- Slickrock Village Green, Falling Leaf Lodge and an award-winning clubhouse that accommodates two dining rooms
- Soft surface tennis courts with professional instructors on staff
- Chautauqua Activity and Fitness center with daily planned family activities, kid friendly programs, full service fitness and spa facilities
- Hiking and camping areas
- Select mountain biking trails
- Heated pool with Orville & Wilbur's poolside restaurant
- Golf Learning and Performance Center
- Golf pro shop
- Game room and movie theatre
- Organic community garden
- Outdoor guide and gear retail store
- Bell tower with performance stage and amphitheatre
- Authentic Mountain Market
note: I have no affiliation with Mountain Air, just flew there once as their guest....Had a blast, this place is first class!
If you really want an adventure for the family, and like rollercoasters, Cedar Point ,Oh...land at KSKY - Griffing Sandusky Airport ,Sandusky, Ohio, if staying at the hotel in the park (which is on the shore of Lake Erie.) they will come and get you (5 minutes from airport to theme park)
Of course the ultimate: fly down to N.Hollywood Fla, rent the required survival gear and go to the Bahamas.(MYAN Andros Island(Airport of Entry))Then on to Treasure Cay,There are some great places to stay on the Treasure Cay beach and even over on Green Turtle (short ferry ride). The beaches are amazing, great fishing and snorkling are close, and it always seems like you have the beach to yourself. I have done this twice. Both times, a trip of a life time for a GA pilot!!
Have fun, post where you decide to go!!!

There are any number of "fly-ins" or "dawn patrols" on any given weekend across the North American Continent. The largest is in Oshkosh, Wisconsin during July 23 - 29, 2007.
