Vets will say about a year for any type of dog however it is safe to start them at 10 months, just make sure you wean them properly so their digestive system is okay with the switch over.

Sometimes (best to talk to a vet first) you can feed them holistic foods such as Nutromax, Wellness, Inova, Canidae etc. from the get go but there are differences in Puppy and Dog food. Puppy food has richer proteins and sometimes gentler products that help the puppies stomach. There have been cases where if the dog doesnt have a simpler diet in the begining it can cause them to have a weaker stomach throughout life.

Six months is too young for adult food. When he turns a year old, then start with the adult food, and go by what it say's on the back of the bag.

You can probably switch him at one or when he is fully grown---ask your vet when he'll be fully grown if you don't know.

Six months is too young to switch him. A puppy that is growing and developing needs different nutrition/calories than an adult who is fully grown and trying to stay the same size.

You need to mix what the breeder has been feeding the puppy to what you want to feed the puppy. In due time you can switch over to what you want to feed your little one. Good luck on your little Shih Tzu.. they are the most lovable dogs there is.
