or is there an age limit?

Yes, but it all depends on the Sate you are applying at and the Departments policies for hiring new officers. My Department in Texas just hired a 48 year old female and a 52 year old male. Neither of them have had any prior experience in the law enforcement field.

But why would you want to start a new career at this stage in life?

It should be pretty easy to find a department without age limits. Even the Feds have relaxed their standards a bit since 9/11 due to an incresed demand and short supply of agents. Check your state P.O.S.T. requirements for the physical agility test(s). I was in my mid-thirties when I became involved in law enforcement, and know a lot of guys older than me when they first joined. Also a lot of state retirement systems require 25 years service before a full retirement, which would put you in the 65 age range when you retire. But you better hurry; we ain't getting any younger, you know.

most departments do have age limits that are waiver-able under certain circumstances like if you did 20 years in the military or are transferring from another department. Check with the department you want to join and the will tell you specifically what the age requirements are and if you qualify for a waiver

Yes you can as long as you pass the physical and all other applicable tests. In this state, I think the limit is 55. At one time, we had a 50 year old woman apply, but she passed everything but the run. That meant she couldn't become an officer.

Yes, but not with most Federal agencies. Try a smaller local department, Univerity police or small Sheriffs office.

A lot of places have age limits, mostly due to pension issues and mandatory retirement ages. There are some places that you can still get into though, you just have to look for them.
