Because it's a sign of respect, even if you do not wish to pledge allegiance. If you are a citizen of another country or it's against your religious upbringing, you should NOT be pledging allegiance. And yes, you do have a choice which is nice.

However, I hope you realize what those stars and stripes are about, especially if you consider yourself American. Six years of bloodshed was made in order to secure our freedom.

Since Highschool I can do what I want, (since I find it rediculous pledging my allegiacne to a flag, and I'm an athiest) but I actually got ISR for it back in middle school, which I thought was total bull, but I live in a All white christian neighborhood in the middle of nowhere, so thats what I get...

its a sign of respect to our country... i'm gunna b mean right now say that if u don't want to respect America by saluting the flag and do the pledge of allegiance... then get the hell out of my country!
seriously tho... standing for the pledge has nothing to do w/ religion.. its a sign of respect for our country and a way of saying that we are loyal to our country and we will protect her... so b prepared to deal w/ patriotic Americans (nicest way to put it) if u don't honor the flag and say the pledge

to those who don't seem to get it: THE PLEDGE HAS NOTHING TO DO W/ RELIGION! DON'T SAY 'UNDER GOD' IF U MUST(i don't)! BUT SAY THE PLEDGE! ITS A SYMBOL OF LOYALTY TO THE COUNTRY!

edited: i love my country dearly and i would fight to the death for her! i am a proud american and everything, but i'm not christian so i don't say the 'under god' part.. but i do say the rest! while i may not like some things that the government do i like freedom and i'd prefer to stay free... and i do understand the meanings behind some of the stranger passed laws and such from the govt.

We stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance not from a requirement but as RESPECT for the country that has given us the right to express ourselves and all of the freedoms that we have. You are quite silly if you do not understand that. You probably don't have any respect for your parents either I am sorry to say. My parents gave everything that they had for mysiblings and I and we all have continually been respectful of them. Think about this as you read the other answers please. Have a great evening.

I never pledged allegiance to the flag, but I stood. Its simply out of respect for those who do.

It aint that big of a sacrifice to make. Its what 30 seconds long? I think you can handle it.

You don't have to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. If you don't want to stand, don't stand. They should take the pledge of allegiance out of schools anyway.

You don't have to stand. If this country really stands (no pun intended) by its belief in freedom of expression, then they should have no problem with your decision. If they make you do something you don't want to do that conflicts with your beliefs, you should talk to the principal.

Stand to respect your peers and country you abide in, but it is up to you whether you put your hand on your heart and recite the pledge.

you don't have to say anything, i don't agree with us having to say the pledge, at least those of us who aren't religious. i stand but i don't speak a word. you have the right to say whatever the hell you want

My goodness precious, don't put yourself out. What is the big deal. Stand up and be glad you live in a free country. Kids fought in wars to give you freedom at least get off your fat butt and respect your country. You sound like a spoiled brat, "I don't have to stand up". Wa wa wa.
