You admit it to the librarians and they will bill you. You cannot just buy a replacement due to restrictions in most libraries, although you can offer. (Sometimes they need to buy the library binding, sometimes not, and there is also a processing fee because those plastic covers and indexing does not just come with the book.)

Think really hard about where it could be. I lost a library book recently and the library sent me a bill for it after a couple of months. I found the book hidden in my cabinet behind the divider. If the book is an inexpensive one, it might be better to buy it now. Find out how much the late fee is. Mine was $10 for the whole semester (4 months). Can mom or dad help you look?

Sorry, but the best thing to do is fess-up. If this is your first time losing a book, it's possible that they'll go easy on you. Also, if you do happen to find the book later on they will most likely refund the money you paid to replace the book (minus any processing fees they might have tacked on).

Go to the library and tell them you've lost it and offer to pay for it. They'll probably tell you to wait until you get a slip in the mail saying you need to pay them back. Take that to them and pay for the book. Tell them now that the book is gone, otherwise they'll add fines on top of the cost of the book.

Well, that happened to my sister. If you searched and still no book, just ask the library what needs to be done. The value/age of the book will be charged to you. The funny thing is when we moved the book was found in the cold starage room.- Cristal
I still think you hid the book on me. - Cristine

Check with the library and see what their policy is. You may have to replace the book, or they may be able to write it off, but you need to check with the library sooner, not later, or else you could incur a lot of over due charges.

Call the library & find out how much it is. This happens all the time, as long as you pay for it you are fine. My library in PHX has started billing it if you don't take care of it yourself - so save yourself the collections charges, bite the bullet & pay up.

Buy a replacement or just pay their cost. If they allow you to replace it, look for a used copy of the book to save yourself some money.

Go to the library, let them know you have lost it. They may well let you have another week to look for it again. Then you have to cough up the $ to buy a new one.
