Do you feel these are one in the same?

Good question! They're not the same, but they serve a similar purpose within their contexts. If you read the whole Sermon on the Mount, which begins with the Beatitudes, you'll see Jesus talks a lot about "fulfilling the law". He's taking the list of commands and rules in the Torah (the Law) and interpreting them to get at the spirit behind the laws. So for example, when he says "You have heard it said 'Thou shalt not murder' but I say to you anyone who hates his brother..." etc. He's saying, big deal if you obey the literal commands and don't go out killing people. God cares about what's in your heart; what kind of person are you?

So the Ten Commandments are a sort of practical list dealing with living in relationship to God and each other. The Beatitudes are a list of the attitudes of the heart that someone will have who is in right relation to God and the people around them. It's the kind of subtle but extremely important difference that characterizes Jesus' teachings.

No, the Ten commandments are rules to which you obey. The Beautitudes are phrases that Jesus said. This will help you in how to treat others and what you should believe in.
