Is sure isn't politically motivated. If you remember, the last person the liberals in the Church wanted to be Pope was Cardinal Ratzinger, a conservative orthodox priest. Doesn't really seem like conservatives are too popular these days either...

While one would hope that the former would be the truth, I would say that both inspiration and political motivation are involved. They might be "princes of the church," but the cardinals are still fallible human men with weaknesses like anyone else.
