I have noticed a green discharge coming from my dog's "little friend". It has been going on for a while but he doesn't seem sick. He usually licks it away but I have wiped it up with a kleenex a couple times and it smells almost coppery. I really can't afford to take him to the vet right now but I don't want him to get really sick. Is he ok?

I would take him to the vet because that could be a sign of an infection.

I agree with Grace, as much as you can't afford to take him to the vet, he may need medical attention. What you could do is call up the vet and describe this condition to him over the phone and maybe he can tell you if this is serious or not. A phone call doesn't cost anything and it may put your mind at ease if it turns out to be nothing. If it does turn out to be something, ask the vet if there is a payment plan you can work out if you can't afford to pay everything all at once. Good luck.

Why do you have a dog if you can't afford to take him to the vet? This is incredibly irresponsible. I know that not everyone is loaded with money, but when you took this dog, you accepted responsibility to take it to the vet when it needs it. It is not only your moral obligation, but a legal one as well.

It's possible that your dog has an infection. You need to call your vet and see what they say. They may ask you additional questions so that you don't have to come in. However, you need to be prepared that your dog will need to be seen and will need antibiotics. Take $100 out of your puppy savings account (all responsible owners with financial difficulties should have one) and go see the vet.

Infections like this can lead to kidney failure and all kinds of issues. If you can't afford $100 to see a vet now for your dog, then you certainly won't be able to afford dialysis or surgery to repair the damage from a rampant infection.

The HSUS has some tips that you may find helpful: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/what_you_can_do_if_you_are_having_trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html

And please, turn off the computer and call the vet ASAP.

ahh yeah buddy- you need to see someone- Most of the time Petstores have seen it and can atleast tell you if it is serious or not. All the local pet stores here are run by Vet students (lucky us) so its easy to get free help. If one had it and now another does thats a good sign something is spreading. I would scrap up the money to see a vet.

A small amount of discharge is ok, but if its dripping on the floor, then he needs medical attention. And if that means you don't eat for awhile, well then, many a man has lived on catshup water for weeks, Good luck.

that is really a illness that needs to be looked at at the vets office.it could be poisoning or anything...if you wait to long it can get worse and your pet could die,,,please borrow the money,,if you had green coming out of you' i bet you would find money to go to a docter, give your dog the same respect ...if you don;t you should turn him over to the humane society so he can get well and not die a painful death...i am a single mom and broke as i am i find a way to get my pet well.if i have to wash windows or sweep streets to get money for the vet 'i do it and have did it...

This is normal.

But if it is excessive you need to take him to the vet.

It's nature's way of cleaning out the plumbing and it's bacteria.

It's normal... If he seems to be bothered, it irritates him, is itchy, he licks excessively, then you should take him to the vet
