Haha thats what my Gpas did-

Do you buy good food for yourself? Why not for him? Pediagree has tons of fillers and isnt a holistic food.

Try sticking him on Nutromax or a Wellness diet. Both products make a line for controlling weight loss. If these arent available try other HOLISTIC foods- they dont use things like corn (which humans cant even digest properly) or biproducts, and chemicals, which means the meat that is in it is good for them, not the meat turned away from the McDonalds Truck. (seriously it happens). When you are feeding him, make sure you check the labels to see that you arent feeding him too much.

When he is feeding, allow him 20 min. to eat what is in the bowl. If he doesnt- take the bowl away. If he doesnt eat it, he will the next time but each time make sure that you are only giving him the recommended serving of the diet product.

When his weight comes down find a diet weight controlled diet food that will maintain his weight and follow those directions.

Also How much is A lot? if they are 3 lbs overweight- that is like 15 lbs on an average woman and 20 on an average man. You should be able to feel their ribs but not see them.

Make sure you are taking him on walks dont just let him out in the backyard. Runs are even better, you are forcing him to excercise. Dont kennel them for more than 4 hours at a time also.

Dogs diets are much easier to fix than a humans, they eat a cup or so of one product and you control the amount (theres not late night snacks or chocolate indulgances) You are in control of what he eats.

And whatever you do if you take them to a vet they will advise
Science Diet- Dont fall for it. They use all kinds of fillers and biproducts. Go to a pet store and find the appropriate food. They will give you good advice on what to look for at a vet however Science Diet is based out of Kansas and they Push and Push and Push their product on all the young impressionable vet students here at KState. Its not good for your dog and it is unecesarily bad on your budget.

Our dog was fixed last year too and she also gained a little weight after the procedure. I'm not really sure how many pounds your dog has gained but you may want to swith to Iam's Weight Control or take your dog outside and run him. If that doesn't work something may be wrong and I would suggest contacting your vet.

Your first thing is to get him on a better quality food. Try something like Solid Gold, Wysong, Evo, Blue Buffalo, or Natural Balance (match the name EXACTLY). http://naturalbalanceinc.com/ Science Diet, Iams, Purina, Eukanuba, and similar foods are not high quality. While pedigree is not the worst food on the planet, it's not a good food.

Next, he's putting on weight because he's not exercising enough. Get him up and active. Take him walking with you daily. Take him to puppy play dates. Take him out to play frisbee in the park. Get going with him.

Good luck to you! : )

Dogs are like people, the eat, they get fat, they want to lose weight, they do more exercise... Walk him more, or find somewhere you can take him where he will be fenced in and can safely run and play. Nothing more fun than watching a dog just get out there and burn around the field!

Exercise is really necessary for the toy breeds to lose weight. I have a pom and I need to walk him at least every other day.

They have weight maintenance dog foods out there. I know one that a lot of Bulldog owners use is Purina O/M (overweight management) which is a prescription food so you would have to talk to your vet about it.
