Why is there such a demand for donated blood when the Biopure Corp. had made a "polymerized bovine product" hemoglobin solution that carries oxygen like blood?

There is no substitute for blood.......These polymerized bovine products can keep the person safe from shock or can help in managment of shock but they can never be as potent a blood because blood not only stabalize the volume but also perform different function which these products can't !! blood contains three different type of cells each containiy different functions....like immunity, Clotting, and oxygen carrying while these products are mostly plasma expanders only .....natural product is always netural !

Expense, and the fact that I'm relatively sure many people would prefer human blood, to the bovine product.

When humans donate willingly, it doesn't upset anyone. When animal blood is obtained, it opens a whole new can of worms. Questions come up. Is it ethical to drain the blood from cows when human blood is voluntarily donated? Are these cows the same cows being used for meat? Are they being raised humanely? Just a few of the hundreds of questions and issues that would come up if we went strictly to the bovine product.

For starters, Biopure has not yet received USFDA approval for its product in the US. They are currently still working with the militray to start human trials, but have not even received approval as of 12/2006.

FromBiopure's website:

Biopure Corporation develops, manufactures and markets pharmaceuticals, called oxygen therapeutics, that are intravenously administered to deliver oxygen to the body's tissues. Hemopure(R) [hemoglobin glutamer - 250 (bovine)], or HBOC-201, is approved for sale in South Africa for the treatment of surgical patients who are acutely anemic. Biopure has applied in the United Kingdom for regulatory approval of a proposed orthopedic surgical anemia indication. The company is developing Hemopure for a potential indication in cardiovascular ischemia, in addition to supporting the U.S. Navy's government- funded efforts to develop a potential out-of-hospital trauma indication. Biopure's veterinary product Oxyglobin(R) [hemoglobin glutamer - 200 (bovine)], or HBOC-301, the only oxygen therapeutic approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Commission, is indicated for the treatment of anemia in dogs. Biopure has sold approximately 180,000 units of Oxyglobin, which have been used to treat an estimated 98,000 animals.

There is no substitute for blood.

Besides, blood does a lot more than carry oxygen. There is the whole "clotting factors" thing to think about, along with electrolye balance, platelets, and so on.

Someday, maybe. Today, no such luck.
