I would disagree with most of the above posts. While in the military, a person would have a great chance of dying, it is not an everyday chance. You only really have a chance to be killed in the military if you are deployed to a war zone.
As a civilian cop, we face the chance everyday of our career.
If you believe the media, our soldiers are being killed in droves in Iraq. Consider this:
In Iraq we have a death rate of about 60 per 100,000 troops by firearms.
In Washington DC we have a death rate of about 80.6 per 100,000 population or about 25% higher than a current war zone.
You are 25% more likely to be killed in Washington DC by a gun than you would if you were in Iraq.
You are even more likely to be killed in a traffic collision than being killed in Iraq.
The main difference is the US Media will not show what is really going on in the world, they only show what will sell press time and what will effect US Policy and Politics.

would probably have a better chance at dieing in the military but it also depends on what branch you are going into. being a cop is also really dangerous but it also depends on what city you are in. my instructer was a cop in Newark New Jersey and he tells us storys where it sounds like he is lucky to be alive. i mean he's told us storys where he pretty much survived because the guys gun jammed. but if you look at the statistics, like 99.5% of all police confrontations are resolved by using their voice.
last year in washington state i think 4 cops died on the line of duty. i personally knew 1 of them. doesnt sound like alot of people but it is.

I haven't seen the statistics, but I would assume that you would have a greater chance dying in a warzone or deployed in the military rather than working as a cop.

The military of course! Cops deal with bank robbers while soldiers deal with suicidal jihad terrorists and road bombs.
