Reasonable and NYC don't really go together. I've stayed at the Hilton New York (not Times Square) and it's a great location and one of the least expensive nicer hotels, but expect to spend close to $300 a night for that hotel now.
Your best bet may be to use expedia or travelocity to narrow down your search. Then, come back and list 5 hotels that you are interested in and why.
With a quick glance at Expedia, you can't even get NEAR Manhattan with a private bathroom for under $200. At around $150 a night, you start to see a few one star places, but only a few. There's a 2.5 star Ramada near Penn Station that may be right around $200, A HoJo in Midtown for just over $200, an EconoLodge in Times Square that's $220, and a Comfort Inn near Central Park west that's just under $300, just to get your going. Your dates may change the prices considerably, though.
Good luck to you and safe travels.

It going to depend on what you want to do the most.
Everything is with-in easy walking distance by subway, the best, cheapest and fastest way to travel in NYC during the day. At night it's easy to take cabs everywhere.
However where you want to stay is dependent on other factors.
As pointed out there is no reasonably priced hotels, however there are plenty that will not cost you an arm and a leg.
NYC is a great place to visit, even in July when it starts getting hot and really humid. I am envious of you.

There are some good internet web pages which could get you a good lodge for a great deal. We recently stayed on the Sheraton long island for a week, and it fee us below £4 hundred the internet internet site i might advise is Hotwire. expenses are in money, and it enables you to choose the final section the place you will possibly desire to stay and ingredients the small print of the lodge (famous individual score, centers, etc.) It would not provide you the call of the lodge till you have booked, to stay away from you doing an instantaneous assessment and them dropping out on comission. We constantly use it while vacationing to the States and have constantly been shocked by making use of the mark downs and the wonderful motels you finally end up in. Our final trip we did an instantaneous assessment of the fee we paid and the fee we'd have paid by making use of going direct throughout the lodge. We saved almost £700!

Do not I repeat DO NOT stay at the Regency Inn & Suites on West 34th Street. This hotel is not only disgusting it is a death trap (at least that is what the NYFD said when they were called there during my stay). It is a dangerous hotel and totally revolting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
