Hello,
I was goign to buy a DVD from a UK company, but is said that "ONLY AVAILABLE IN PAL FORMAT". Can somebody clarify in the most non'technical terms possible what that means, and what format I need to look for? I bought my machine in the U.S.A, and I beleive it's a panasonic. I don't know what other information you would need!!!

They encode the DVDs to only work in a specific country or countries. This is done to prevent the sale of copywrited material from being used or sold in another country. There are ways around this. Certain DVD Writers can copy the material in any format to use it in another format suitable for your DVD player.

Sadly, we use NTSC here in the US, and not the PAL format. But there are ways as discussed to work around that.

Some DVD players that you buy come PAL compatible. The best way to find out if your DVD player is PAL compatible, is to get in contact with the manufacturer....I suggest first visiting their website and see if you can perhaps find specific model information for your player, and if you can't just give them a call and ask, I'm sure they'll have an answer. If your player isn't PAL compatible, I don't think there is anything you can do, you may have to just get a new one that is compatible with various formats.

PAL is a different format that most of the world uses. NTSC is what america uses, some DVD players sold in america can play both but they are kinda hard to find
