After two bad throat infections in as many years, I was sent to ENT consultant who recommended tonsillectomy. Everyone I know had theirs out as a kid. What's it like? Does it hurt? How long does it take to recover?

Had my tonsils out when I was 21, yes, it's sore for about three weeks after, but worth going through all that as there is no further sore throats or infections after.

If the consultant reccomends it get it done.

What's it like? - After you get them taken out, your throat may be sore for a few days, and your voice may sound a little bit out of touch as well. Also they reccomend to eat and drink cold soothing things, like ice-cream, popsicles, etc.

Does it hurt? - Well the doctor operating will usually put you asleep so you won't feel a thing, once the surgery is over you'll be woken up and go on with your day. You might have to spend a night in the hospital just to see how you're progressing.

How long does it take to recover? - A few days to a few weeks. Not that long.

I haven't but I didn't have my tonsils taken out too long ago. It doesn't hurt at all. You are put to sleep and are really sleepy for about a day after the proceedure. You're voice is scatchy and your throat hurts a little, not as much as a sore throat when you are sick. You can't eat any hard food and ice cream is prefered. Having your tonsils taken out isn't painful and you are required for 2 weeks of bedrest after it.

My daughter had hers removed when she was 18 it was a bit sore for a couple of days then she was fine , the main thing that upset her was she couldn't go out for 2 weeks in case of infection.
