There are a number of different detectors depending on the type of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma) that you are trying to detect. The most common detector is a Geiger counter (a Geiger Muller tube) but you also find a lot of scintillation counters for alpha particle radiation (like the stuff that comes from Radon in peoples basements)
