i got a notice in the mail a couple days ago that i filed my taxes on the federal side but that i didn't for maryland state side. i find that hard to believe that i would simply forget to file my maryland taxes. is there a way i can check to see if i filed for maryland? i called the # on the form and they are saying the same thing of course. is there a way online to check if i did file or not?

If the state says you didn't file then you almost certainly didn't file. They sent you a letter to that effect and told you the same thing on the phone. If there is an on-line resource it would use the same data source and will tell you the same thing.

You should send them a photocopy of your copy of your state return. They can use that to track down your return.

Even if you DID file your state return, if they have no record, you have to refile. If you have some record for mailing (i.e. return receipt), you can argue to waive penalties and interest. The only website that could possible have a record is the state's tax department. It will have the same information as the letter and the phone number for the state's tax department.

whether that's a low salary job, i might only deal straight away with the state. If he's a individual of potential, i might touch a CPA and have the CPA help him style it out and negotiate something favorable with the state. be optimistic to apply an area CPA who knows those regulations particularly than one from out of state.
