Ok, get ready to be grossed out, but most of the dust in your house is particles of dried out skin.

Then there is pollen, wood dust, animal dander, particles of dirt and pollution from outside.

Dust is caused by the airborne particles of fine, dry matter from the surface of the ground. You cough to clear all of the dust out of your windpipe. Most dust is just dead skin cells.

dust is a mixture basically of everything and anything. it has alot of dead human and animal skin flakes in it, dirt, plant life like pollen. particles of hair...yadda yadda yadda....it gets kinda grose after that so i'm not going to go into much detail. it could be making you cough for a variety of reasons.
1) it could just irritate and or dry out your throat when you breathe it in.
2) you could be allergic to one of the components of the dust. lets say you're allergic to pollen...the seasonal pollen in the dust could be doing that. does it make you sneeze or irritate your eyes as well?
3) could be a psychological response to the dust....it might not really bother you, but when you come in contact with it, your brain tells you it's bad and causes you to cough. kinda like tapping somone on the arm and hearing them say "ouch" even thought you didn't tap them hard enough to hurt. it's an automated response they have learned.
