If your friends dad is living out on this 5 acre ranch by himself it doesn't seem weird.

What a lot of non pet owners don't realize is that we pet owners look at our animals as family.

Owning animals is just like having kids. You have to feed and bathe them and when they are sick take them to the vet just like you would a child.

As far as you friends dad. Twelve dogs may seems excessive to some people but remember he has a 5 acre ranch, it's a lot of property for them to run on. Now if he was living in a single family home with a small backyard ...yeah it would be too many.

I believe you can have as many as you want BUT THEN you must can look after them and you not other people. I had 9 dog, 1 died last year, the doctor say it was "katgriep" (sorry don't know the English word for it). But all the other 8 are healthy have food every night with meat and gravy and fresh water. No it is not weird. Like me I like dogs and this is the reason why I have so many because you have one then you see a nice small love able puppy and then you want that puppy. But I have enough dogs - they will keep me busy for a long time.

In my opinion he does not have "too" many as he is able to provide for their care and needs

Some people can handle 20 dogs effectively where for other people even having 1 dog is too many.

There are a lot of factors involved, which include experience, knowledge, finances, ability to handle and care for, ability to make/ manage time for, a home that can accomodate, and it is possible to have 12 dogs and live in a modest home with little yard if the person can devote time to walking and exercising dogs as well.

I do know a person who has one dog and a child, she cannot manage either and has trouble just taking care of herself, so I know for a fact she has too many with just one dog.

I also see every day here people with only one dog, that posts their dog is sick, what do I do? , I have no money for a vet?

I have 4 that is my comfortable limit financially inorder to provide the best in food and available cash funding for vet care, though physically & emotionally I could be comfortable caring for 7 dogs like I have when I fostered but another factor is the dogs themselves,

I could handle 7 retired greyhounds if they were compatible as they are a peice of cake to raise and handle , but if they were 7- 1 1/2 year olds and younger, I would likely be pulling my hair out in frustration until they matured

As long as he is able to take care of them..then what is the problem here. My hats off to him. I know some just have one and don't take care of them that good. Maybe it might be weird to some people but ask him what he thinks. I have 8 soon to be nine and they all live in my home. I, like him, take care of my dogs. I have 35 acres and not to many neighbors since I live in the country. I happen to love animals sometimes better than people..If you ask him maybe he feels the same way.

Does is seem weird?????? NOPE

If he is caring for them properly and they are not bothering neighbors (which might be OK with 5 acres), then I guess he does not have too many. But 12 is more than I would want. I have two and it's a lot of work.

No, its not weird. Especially if he has a large property, it actually makes sense to have that many dogs (cuts down on rat/mouse population, and protects the property). Too many dogs would probably too many for an individual to take care of.

Depends on the situation.

The people who taught me to ride had 17 house dogs and a whole kennel full of black labrador hunting dogs. But they also had 40 horses, a herd of cattle, two farms, a few hundred red deer and a 34 bedroom house with two grand pianos. 12 cats too.

If you can give all the dogs top quality food, care and stimulation, I'd say thirty is a top number, but only for whole kennels (for showing/breeding) I think normal people should have a maximum of twenty, and I still don't know how you could provide for all of them.

As long as he can take care of them, why not? Sounds like a REAL dog lover to me!

I don't think there is a limit on how many dogs you can own. As long as you can take proper care of all of them, I don't see a problem with it.
