I started out as a hospital volunteer myself. In many cases, the work you do does make a difference, but some of it is indirectly related to the care of others.
I suggest that you contact your local volunteer center. They specialize in connecting you with volunteer opportunities that match your skills and interests. Most of the projects are one-time or short-term. However, volunteer centers can also connect you with hundreds of non-profit agencies in your area.
Here are some links to help you find your local volunteer center:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm
Through my volunteer center, I've fed the homeless, worked directly with children at the local shelter, tutored children at the local library, and many other direct hands-on projects.
Good luck!

Have you tried working for a homeless shelter, or a crisis nursery, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Head Start or Boys and Girls Club in your area? those are always great places to start looking.
What types of talents do you have? Or deep passions? In a hospital i can understand them wanting you to not touch any patients, that is cause for a liability- but maybe they have a child care center on premisis on the childrens ward that you can staff?
If helping the needy though is what you really want to do- i suggest starting at a homeless shelter. You get great experience while working with people from all walks of life.

Volunteer to help with children in treatment foster care. They need so much, and the resources are so limited! If you get connected with a good program and show your dedicated, you will learn more than you will teach! You will experience life from a very unique perspective, and every child could benefit from more of the right kind of attention! (Becoming licensed or certified is not required, but it is disturbingly simple!)

Well, you could try the animal shelters, I do that and its great.. Also, check at your local library or police dept. as they usually have postings of any upcoming volunteer events, also, you could try a food kitchen, a nursing home, or maybe even meals on wheels, they are always looking for volunteers...
Good luck and I commend you for the services that you are willing to provide to your community...

How about volunteering at a homeless shelter? A local food pantry? How about working with kids in a children's home?

The Boys and Girls Club of America they look for volunteers so does the salvation army. With the boys and girls club you can be a big brother/sister and be there for a kid who otherwise wouldnt have anyone. hope that is helpful
