Love is respect. Respect for each other's intellect, personality, and human emotions. Respect for feelings and opinions; for one's individuality, one's strengths and weaknesses. Respect for accomplishments, personal triumphs, and career aspirations. Respect for the space needed to allow someone to grow.
Love is caring. Caring that the other comes to no ill, that they are happy and feel worthwhile. Caring enough to help without requiring the other to ask; to want to sacrifice if the other is in need. Encouraging each other to pursue those dreams and goals to fruition; standing by to catch the other when they stumble along the way.
Love is emotional support. Not a stifling, protective blanket, but a reliable presence to balm the wounds of life's occasional setbacks. A word of encouragement, a reaffirmation of trust and confidence, an occasional prod in a positive direction.
Love is trust. Trusting that the other will be faithful to the relationship, no matter how far away or how long apart, no matter what the temptations, the circumstances, or the behavior of others. Trust cannot co-exist with jealousy or possessiveness, for they are the hallmarks of insecurity and distrust. One can only trust another when one trusts oneself.
