Why do so many people have these dogs? All I hear is how smart they are and what great pets they are. I have yet to meet one that is as smart as a poodle, or as brave as Schnauzer. Plus they shed and slaber all over the place.

The Labrador Retriever happens to be the #1 dog in the United States the Golden also ranks in the top 10. They are great family dogs, good with kids. No they are probably not quit as smart as a Standard Poodle, however, if you think about it, the Std. Poodle ranks #2 in intelligence, where the Border Collie ranks #1 as the most intelligent breed of all. Everyone likes the breed of dog that they have, that is why they have one. Give the Labs and Goldens a break, they are great dogs too!!!!!

One last thing, I have yet to see a Schnauzer used for guiding eyes for the blind.

Being a Dog Training Instructor, I have learned not so much to judge a whole breed as much as judge an individual dog. Kind of like judging a whole race of people instead of judging that single person.
They generally take a little longer to mature, 2-3 years, hence the slobber "slaber" part of them. I have had some extremely smart ones when they were young, only had the hyper thing with them. After about 2-3 years, there are a lot of very calm and smart ones. I have seen some very brave ones, I have seen some mean ones, I have seen very smart ones, I've seen some stupid ones. I have seen some dumb poodles and some coward Schnauzers. Maybe you should get around different breeds of dogs more before you decide a whole breed of one is a certain way.

I have two obedience trained goldens that are smart, well trained animals that have excelled at all sorts of activities. I also have experience with poodles and my goldens were much quicker learners. Bravery is not what they are about - they were originally bred to retrieve game. Yes, they shed if not groomed, but poodles need to be clipped. All dogs need some maintenace. I've never had one that slobbered.

Different breeds for different people. I don't hate any breed of dog.

Well I certainly don't hate them but I don't really like them unless they belong to someone else. Their temperment and attitude is just not my cup of tea and I prefer a much different look. I'm a shepherd lover through and through! I don't think that it is fair to criticize people if they do like them. You are very correct that they are not like a poodle or schnauzer but maybe many of the people with labs and goldens don't like those breeds. Honestly, I don't care for them myself. I would never want to groom a poodle and I find both breeds unattractive. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to dogs. If you don't like certain breeds then don't get them. Just don't criticize others because they do like them and certainly don't blame the dogs. They are what we humans created them to be.

They "slaber" ???

First of all I say "Tomatoe" you say "Toematto" get it?

Most prefer Labs/Golden's because they are mild mannered/even tempered/predictable dog's.

They are not prone to the annoying screeching yappy yaps that Poodles are Infamous for. MOST Poodles (unless trained otherwise) are not "family/kid dogs" . Poodles happen to have mood swings that they are also known for.
Poodles are more high maintenance and need more grooming.

Labs/Golden's are known as "kid/family dogs" . They are brave dogs. They will protect their turf/owners. They are not "killers" and they are not "wimps" either. They are more active (Poodles wrestling on the ground?? LOL) and are not as moody. They show more allegiance to their owners and love too.

ALL dogs (for the most part) shed and slobber "Mcfly".

Hate is a rotten word to use to describe a feeling for a dog.

Hate is used to describe a person like "Hitler" or "Cabbage" or "Abusers" of any kind.

Get it? Got it? Hope so kiddo...

Besides has anyone forced you to pick a Lab/Golden as a personal pet??

I'll take my pick, you take yours. America=Freedom of choice!
Ain't she great like that?!

Ya I hate them too. But lets talk about Pus sy dogs. A Poodle or Schnauzer would actually stand and protect its owner. Whether it is 5 pound Toy Poodle or 100 pound Giant Schnauzer. That is what they do. Labs and Retrieves chase. I know because I have chase by many while going on my morning run. They will even take a cheap shot if they can and bite you from behind. The problem is after they get bit back. They don't want to fight anymore. I have had yorkies that would not stop attacking me no matter how hard kicked them. Not those in breed labs. They go right to the backs and pee on themselves. Now that is a worthless mutt. I am sorry lets use "ITS ME"s language again . That is a pus sy dog.

Hey how about a dog that is not oily and sheds all over your house.
Oh ya how about that lab that dragged that poor kid around the yard with a scarf around her neck killing her. Yup that's a smart breed. Good breed to guide blind people. Please. There are so many better breeds then Labs and Golden's.

I agree. Poodles are definitely the best dogs to have but they're not as cute haha in my opinion. The overwhelming majority of labs I've seen (which is a lot, I work at a dog kennel) are all nuts. Half of them are required to even bring tranqs! The goldens aren't as bad but you get one every once in a while whose bouncing off the walls. Honestly, I think it all depends on how the dog was raised. We had a golden who we trained very well and she was the most obedient dog I've known. But like I said, I think for the most part it all depends on their owners. Today no one bothers to train there dog right. But your right, poodles don't really need to be trained, for some reason they're just good on their own!

I don't hate Labs and Goldens, I just think they are overrated. Did you know that Labs score LOWER than Pitbulls on behavioral tests? Yeah, Crazy. So much for a family dog LOL

I mean they're cool dogs and most can be very loyal but they arent for me.
I love pits, rotties, siberian huskys, sheperds! (mostly huge dogs, but all dogs have my heart!) and of course my little Doxie :]
