There are different flavors of Buddhism. If you want to learn about Zen Buddhism, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind
by Shunryu Suzuki is a great book.

"The Words of My Perfect Teacher" Patrul Rinpoche
"The Lam Rim Chen Mo: The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment" Lama Tsong Khapa
"Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand" Pabongka Rinpoche
"The Jewel Ornament of Liberation" Gampopa
Any one of these would be sufficient to get you going. One good book deserves another. Better to find a real, live Teacher, though.
These are all practice texts.

"Buddhism Without Beliefs" or "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buddhism" will give you enough of an overview for you to glean what you want.
